Echoes 2023

"Vulnerability is the essence of connection and connection is the essence of existence."

Echoes Statement

Exploring Tasmania’s historic sites, I’m drawn to the colour-faded walls of Port Arthur’s commandant’s house and reflections at the waterhole beneath the convict-laboured quarry of Coal Mines. The weight of historic tragedy and the allure of the sites’ natural beauty collide in a disorienting dance, leaving me immersed in overwhelming emotions. Standing in the shadows of the past, I wonder if the prisoners grasped the beauty around them—did they notice leaves dancing in the breeze or the sun’s play on the sea amidst their harsh reality?

Contemplating the human experience in times of darkness, I question if these individuals, shackled by circumstances, let light penetrate their souls, or if their struggles rendered them inaccessible. These reflections underscore the universal challenge we all face: staying connected to light in our darkest moments. Like the convicts and officers who walked these grounds, can we access our vulnerability, allowing light to pierce through the consuming darkness? Tasmania's history echoes, urging us to reflect on our journey and find a connection to that elusive light, even within the shadows of tragedy.
